Start, Stop, Continue

Now that it’s December and getting close to our big annual team meeting, how to conduct an effective retrospective is top of mind for me. One of the all-time favorites is the Start, Stop, Continue activity. It is simple (and self-explanatory).
I like to replace the “Continue” column with “Change”. The main reason being that we usually either have too many items or too few items in the “Continue” column, and people often only think about the new items that were tried since the last retrospective. “Change” also has the benefit of allowing for more creative ideas.
